Founder

Brett Hammerman is the founder of Message in our Music. He is a musician & a regularly contributing blogger.
Brett is a High School student living in New York City with a strong passion for music. He started taking guitar lessons when he was 9 years old, and has never stopped playing. Since then, he has participated in annual recitals to display a year of hard work learning new guitar techniques and songs. Brett began songwriting when he was 10 years old, and continues to write original songs inspired by his experiences, and uses music as a creative outlet in his life. In addition to guitar and songwriting, Brett also learned how to play the bass in Middle School, so he has the experience of playing in an orchestra as well. He has performed at nursing homes, as well as in his school, but plays for the children at Mount Sinai Hospital the most often. A few times a year, he creates a setlist of around 10 songs, and performs it for kids too sick to leave their hospital rooms. He also attends GuitarMash Songwriting Circles to improve his songwriting skills, and is a founding member of the New 42 Teen Council, an organization with a mission for bringing the arts, especially theater, to underfunded schools. Finally, he serves on the Daniel’s Music Foundation Junior Council and leads its affiliated club at school, whose goal is to expand opportunities for kids with disabilities to access music. Beyond music, Brett is extremely passionate about politics. He has registered people to vote by volunteering with HeadCount, discusses both national and global politics as a member of his school's Public Forum Debate team, and has worked for a New York congressman. Music and politics play such an integral role in Brett’s identity, and to him, its rewards are invaluable, which is why he created the site to celebrate the connection between them.
